Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom

Genre: History picture book
The book was a conversation between God and Harriet journey to freedom, how to help others to their freedom. No one knew she was leaving, she prayed and asked for guidance and God stayed with her the entire time. She hid in safe places until it was okay to come out. When she finally reached her freedom, she wanted to go back and help others achieve this. She ended up saving hundreds of slaves and showed them the way through the underground railroad.

Discussion questions:
  • How would you feel if your rights were taken from you?
  • Why would she want to help other slaves when it was hard to escape for herself?
  • What would you have done if you were in Harriet's position? Why?
Activities
  • Have the students listen to a song called "Following the Drinking Gourd", decipher the meaning, and show how it helped runaway slaves find the way
  • Write a journal activity about what slavery means to them
